Newport by Sierra Beeler

Once the first pack’s bought there’s no turning back.

‘Tween their lips, first puff’s unforgettable.

Smoke. Puff. Drag. The nicotine spreads like facts,

through the brain; information unstable.

Inhaled carcinogens swell in the lungs,

and embeds the cancer with thick sick tar.

Institutional’zation of our young,

ruins their minds leaving nothing to mar.

Smoke blown in the faces of passersby,

Inhaled, knowledge swelled; cracks there own cartons.

And thus begins anew: sentenced to die,

with sticks ‘tween lips without any pardon.

Gimme one book or gimme one Lucy,

either way their seduction will kill me.
