Bloodstained -Ritual of the Night- : A Review by Austin DeMeglio

When I first saw Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night at New York Comic Con, I was thrilled. I had not prior knowledge of it. I was able to play the demo, and that was about 3 years ago. I was following the game since then before its release. And my goodness was it agonizing! Bloodstained kept getting delayed over and over again, but I’d rather that than for the game to be disappointing.
Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night finally released on June 18th, 2019, but it was absolutely worth it. The gameplay is fun, a lot of fun. The throwbacks to Castlevania: Symphony of the Night made the game that much more special. Bloodstained in and of itself is a nod those Metroidvania games. Metroidvania is a genre of game in the style of Metroid and Castlevania; continuous exploration of a map, and certain places the player must return because they don’t have a certain upgrade.
There is not much else to talk about in regard to the gameplay itself, it is just like any Metroidvania game, but I definitely do not mean that in a negative way. It is fun going back through different you have explore already looking for new secret items, or even secret bosses. I played for hours and I am still yet to be bored (I haven’t beat it yet, but I am close).
I love this game’s character design. I am infatuated with the way the characters look. My god. It is beautiful. I found out that the designer of the Bloodstained was also one of the original creators who worked on Castlevania. I had one of those moments where I was like, “Ahh, that makes sense now.”
One major aspect of the original Castlevania is the music, and yes, Bloodstained delivers. Music is so important in terms of making a good game, and some developers fail to realize that, but I am glad this game has a good original soundtrack.
This game is great for fans who like this style, and for newcomers. If you are looking for a game to play that won’t take too much of your time, definitely play this one. Buy it, especially on the switch. Oh! It’s only 40 dollars, so pick it up!
